D'evils [Doers of evil], on this land, for some reason have a big problem with fruit. I mean for almost 400 years. In fact my 5th Great Grandmother, Marguerita, in the late 1770's had to contend with this same type of sickness. This is the time period when the Messianic fanatics, exiled from Spain and Portugal, were taking over the colonies and Spain, along with the Catholic Church, was fighting desperately to keep a foothold in the states united.
In the areas that the two groups could agree and cooperate, they would, and one such area was Indentures [slaves] , Indian, White or Negro. None of those groups were to make a thin dime. They were to remain impoverished, and over generations enslaved….
“Article XIX. We also forbid slaves from selling any type of commodities, even fruit, vegetables, firewood, herbs for cooking and animals either at the market, or at individual houses, without a letter or a known mark from their masters granting express permission. Slaves shall risk the confiscation of goods sold in this way, without their masters receiving restitution for the loss, and a fine of six pounds shall be levied against the buyers...”
Code Noir, Louisiana “Black” Code.(1705)
My Great grandmother did not have a master. She was not a slave. My Great grandmother was selling fruit with a wholesaler, Miguel, and the evil doers arrested her and accused her of being a slave. Why? Because she was brown skinned. They took her and her associate to jail for a period. She went for selling fruit, him for letting her. She literally had to go all the way to the Spanish Supreme Court to get the matter clarified and her standing as “FREE” documented. Her case is one of the oldest in Louisiana. The bloody document is below. The ancestors speak still. they tell the story in ways only those of brighter lights can hear. The past was bloody.
Spanish Court Order, April 5, 1783:
“Marguerite, a free Negress, and her four mulatto children, were ordered to pay the Guillory heirs 600 pesos, in confirmity to and under the following conditions: 150 pesos which has to be counted as diminished by the personal labors of her son, Juan Bautista, during two years and two months that he must remain in the service of Juan [Jean] B. Guillory, and 150 pesos that she has to pay in cash, 50 pesos more to be paid within three months, and the remaining 250 pesos within two years counted from this day. As soon as the amount shall be paid, the Guillory heirs agree to give Maria, Joseph, Juan Bautista, and Catalina their freedom.”
The gold “pesos” were paid forthwith...
Yeah, devils have a big problem with fruit, or with self sufficiency, and that will never change. How else can satan rule? People who can take care of themselves are persona non grata. People doing for self don’t need the devil. Some things never change, but know, with certitude, “It “ain’t” about fruit.” It never was.
My people shed blood to keep those 149 pieces of paper, those 149 pages of freedom, “pre-constitution” standing and original sovereignty on the land. The evil ones wanted that instrument gone. All Mighty God didn’t. That is a private family story.
Lord have Mercy
I see this woman as a strong soul. I couldn't imagine those times.
Just to elaborate. This whole issue with my grandmother was about money. The extended Guillory clan did not want her to benefit after my grandfathers death. They sued her, and tried to have her placed under "contract indenture" when she was FREE.
